Alternatives For Children

Since its inception in 1988, Alternatives For Children has provided care to 10,000 children and their families throughout Suffolk and Nassau Counties.

These children, diagnosed with various disabilities or conditions including autism, blindness and visual impairments, cerebral palsy, communication and language disorders, developmental delays, and Down syndrome, have found a beacon of hope, comprehensive treatment for their disabilities, and educational programs when few alternatives were available.

Today with facilities in Aquebogue, East Setauket, Southampton and Dix Hills, Alternatives For Children cares for and provides services for over 600 children annually through its Child Day Care centers, Early Intervention Program and Preschool Programs.

In 2001, the Board of Trustees committed to a series of actions to replace the main campus facility in Port Jefferson because it could no longer accommodate the growing population of children with diverse therapeutic needs requiring specialized treatment space.

It was clear that the most appropriate course of action was for Alternatives For Children to construct a new facility where the various needs of the children could be met and a long term home for the School would be established.

Under the leadership of the Alternatives For Children Board of Trustees, the Executive Director and staff, $8.6 million was secured to bring the project to fruition. In just 16 months, a site was selected, construction commenced and a beautiful new 36,000 square foot facility in East Setauket was erected as the new home for Alternatives for Children.

Situated on 4.6 acres of property, the facility features:
Larger and increased number of classrooms to meet the needs of the current and future enrollment
Speech Therapy Treatment areas
Computer and Technology Center
Dedicated Music Classroom
An expanded Library and Resource Room
A Sensory Integration Therapy Room
Occupational and Physical Therapy Gymnasiums and Rehabilitation facilities
State of the art handicapped accessible Outdoor Playgrounds
State-of-the-art Security and Safety System
Administration Suites and Offices

Alternatives For Children East Setauket officially opened its doors for students on January 5, 2004.

In 2005, the Board of Trustees of Alternatives For Children undertook a $2.3 million Capital Campaign committed to raising significant philanthropic support to fulfill several short and long term goals.

These Goals Included

GOAL ONE ACHIEVED- Acquiring the property outright. The land on which Alternatives For Children is built was leased for a period of ten years. By raising additional funds, to be set aside from the general operating account into a special account, Alternatives For Children would safeguard its long-term future by providing a permanent home through the purchase of the property.
Short term goal: $ 1.3 million

GOAL TWO – To raise funds for a special redemption of up to a $1 million, reducing our principal debt on the IDA Bond for the construction of the East Setauket facility. This reduction in debt service would go a long way in establishing a firm financial footing for Alternatives For Children.
Short term goal: $1 million

In 2010 through prudent financial planning and fiscal responsibility, GOAL ONE was achieved and final payment was made to purchase the land on which Alternatives For Children East Setauket is located.

Now the efforts of the Capital Campaign Committee and its chairperson Michael Russell are dedicated to achieving GOAL TWO by February 2013.
